Mstovgorod

Founded: Unknown
Continent: Allyria
Realm: Matriarchate of Periaslavl
Oblast: Zapad Oblast
Boyar: Anatoly Anatolivich

Pronunciation

muh-STOV-guh-RODE

Mstovgorod is the largest city in Zapad Oblast, Matriarchate of Periaslavl. Its current boyar is Anatoly Anatolivich.

It lies at the intersection of the North Road and the Mstov River, just before it turns into fens and marshes before emptying in Woden's Sea.

Despite its location at the end of one of the great rivers of Periaslavl, Mstovgorod is not a huge port. The fens and marshes make it difficult for larger ships to navigate out to Woden's Sea, meaning the riverboats often pick their way through and slightly south along the coast to Demmen in the Kreisens. It does serve as an important transshipment point for the caravans along the North Road and for goods going west from southern Zapad Oblast and northern Valdaiskoye Oblast.

On the plus side, the inability of large warships to attack Mstovgorod means it is well-defended, especially from the west and north, and of minimal value. What might have been a constant battleground for Svellheim and Periaslavl has instead become a fairly solid boundary between the two, though Svellheim has successfully attacked and destroyed the fortified bridges that Periaslavl maintains over the Mstov here.

It is also one of the oldest cities in all Eard and its original founding is lost in time. Given the nature of trade up and down the Mstov River and through Woden's Sea, both Demmen and Mstovgorod were settled at least as early as the first century after the Akkermenian Empire fell. Some Chroniclers and scholars suggest there were even settlements here even farther back.

Heraldry

The banner of Mstovgorod is divided into four quarters, the upper left and lower right red and the upper right and lower left blue. Each red quarter is charged with a leaping white salmon, facing left.
